How to read this page
How to read the fire-detection count
Canada has 836 fire detections from satellite in this page’s window; the count rises and falls with satellite passes, it isn’t continuous.
Where this data comes from
Satellite fire detections from NASA’s FIRMS, with low/medium/high confidence per point.
What detection doesn’t tell you
Dense smoke or cloud hide active fires from the satellite; a low count can mean an unseen fire, not an absent one.
Words on this page
FRP (fire radiative power)
The energy released by a fire detection, in megawatts, measured by satellite from the infrared brightness of the burn. A higher FRP means a more intense fire in that satellite pixel, not necessarily a bigger one: a small, very hot fire can outscore a large, weak one.
Standard definition by NASA FIRMS — Fire Information for Resource Management System · FRP (fire radiative power)
Preliminary data
A measurement published as soon as it is collected, before the agency’s final review. It can be corrected or withdrawn: earthquake magnitudes shift in the first hours, air-quality readings are revised weeks later. Use it to plan your day, not for regulatory or legal purposes.

How to read these numbers
The count is the number of hot pixels in the Canada coordinate box, not the number of fires: a single large fire front produces dozens of hotspots.
Frequently asked questions
- How many hotspots are there in Canada today?
- The highlighted number is the count of hot pixels in the past 24 hours inside the queried area, with the time of each detection in the table.
- Where can I see the fire on a map?
- Every row carries the latitude and longitude of the detection, which you can open in any map. The source link leads to the official FIRMS map.
