How to read these numbers
The NHC issues a full advisory every six hours, with intermediate updates when a storm threatens land. For each system we show the Saffir-Simpson category, maximum sustained wind in knots and mph, central pressure and direction of motion.
When nothing is active the list is empty, and you still have the season, names and history pages, which do not depend on a storm being out at sea.
Frequently asked questions
- Is there a hurricane right now?
- If the table is empty, no system is active in the Atlantic or eastern Pacific at this moment. Outside the season that is the normal state.
- Why is the wind given in knots?
- That is the unit used in official advisories. We show the conversion to mph and km/h beside it.
- Are hurricane, typhoon and cyclone the same thing?
- Yes, the same phenomenon named differently by region: hurricane in the Atlantic and eastern Pacific, typhoon in the western Pacific, cyclone in the Indian Ocean and around Australia.
