Surf forecast: what the buoys are measuring now

These are measurements from moored buoys, not model forecasts. Open keyless coverage exists for the coasts of the United States and the British Isles.

Open ocean buoy data, not spot by spot forecasts. Before paddling out, check local conditions and beach flags.

How to read these numbers

Significant wave height is the average of the highest third of the waves recorded in the past half hour: slightly smaller than the biggest sets. The dominant period, in seconds, tells you more about quality than the height does: a 14 second swell from far away builds walls; a 6 second local wind sea makes choppy water.

A buoy is open ocean. Near the beach waves refract, the bottom changes the size and local wind decides the rest, so read the buoy as the swell that is arriving.

Frequently asked questions

Is buoy wave height what I will surf?
Almost never. On a shallow reef the wave can break bigger than the buoy value; in a sheltered bay, much smaller.
What is dominant period?
The interval between crests in the most energetic part of the sea. Above 12 seconds means swell from a distant storm, usually better for surfing.
Is there a buoy off my coast?
The open network covers the United States, Alaska, Hawaii and the British Isles well. For other coasts we found no free, keyless source with permission for commercial use.
