What a cookie is, plainly

It is a small file a site stores in your browser so it can recognise that browser on a later visit. It gives no access to your files, your camera or your GPS; it is used to count visits, remember a preference and pick an ad.

Some are set by us, others by the companies that deliver part of the page — that is the case for the ads and the video player.

This site does not ask for your location

Worth saying, because a weather site normally does. Not here: every town has its own address, the page is the same for everyone, and no GPS data is read, stored or passed to a third party.

The map at the foot of some pages is a Google Maps frame showing the town in the address. It loads only when you scroll near it.

Advertising and consent in the European Economic Area

This site serves readers in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and across the European Economic Area and Switzerland. In those regions personalised advertising may only be shown with consent collected by a platform certified to the industry standard. That is why a notice appears there first — and your answer counts: if you refuse, ads remain but stop being personalised.

Outside those regions you can turn personalisation off at any time in your Google account ad settings, or through the industry opt-out tools listed on the privacy page.

How to delete or block them

Every browser can delete stored cookies and block new ones, per site or in general. Look for "cookies" or "site data" in your browser settings.

Blocking everything does not break this site: the forecast, the calendar, the earthquake list and the eclipse page keep working, because they are HTML built on the server. What may stop working is the embedded video, the map and the audience count.
