Wildfire smoke map
The NOAA Hazard Mapping System publishes, every day, the smoke plumes visible in satellite imagery, classified as light, medium or heavy.
A satellite hotspot is not a confirmed fire. For incidents and evacuation, follow the fire service and your local emergency agency.

How to read these numbers
The plumes are drawn by analysts over the imagery, which makes the product more trustworthy than an automatic detection, but it comes out once a day. The smoke drawn is in the air column: it may be high up with no effect on breathing, or right at ground level.
To know the effect on the air you breathe, the indicator is surface PM2.5, on the air quality page. Under a heavy plume the index passes 150 easily.
Frequently asked questions
- Is high smoke harmful?
- Smoke high in the atmosphere turns the sky milky and the sun red without worsening surface air. The problem starts when the plume descends, which PM2.5 monitoring shows.
- Do masks help?
- A well fitted N95 or FFP2 filters most PM2.5. A cloth mask is useless against smoke.
