How to read these numbers
A public page cannot know where you are without asking the browser for permission, and text generated from a location is useless to someone arriving from search. The honest answer is the list: every region has its own page, showing the coordinate box used to query the catalogue.
If your town is not listed, open the closest region. The catalogue is queried by coordinate box, so a neighbouring region usually contains the quake you felt.
Frequently asked questions
- I felt a quake and it is not listed. Why?
- Very small quakes only enter the catalogue where there are stations nearby. In sparsely instrumented regions the practical threshold is around magnitude 3. It may also have been blasting, construction or a heavy truck.
- How do I work out the distance to the epicentre?
- Each row carries the coordinates and the USGS description in the form "80 km SW of", always measured from the nearest town rather than from you.
