How to read these numbers
The index is computed per reporting area, not per address. One station represents a whole district, and next to a busy road the real value can be much worse than the station reading.
On a wildfire smoke day the picture changes within hours. It is worth checking the smoke map page too, which uses NOAA satellite analysis.
Frequently asked questions
- Why is the station so far from my home?
- The official network is designed to represent average population exposure, not every street. Large cities have several reporting areas; pick the one matching your side of town.
- Can I trust a home sensor?
- A low cost sensor is fine for trends, but it is not calibrated and usually overestimates PM2.5 when humidity is high.
