Hurricane season dates

In the Atlantic the season runs from 1 June to 30 November. In the eastern Pacific it starts earlier, on 15 May, and ends on the same date.

Official warnings come from the National Hurricane Center and your local emergency agency. This page is informational and does not replace an official advisory.

How to read these numbers

The dates are not a law of nature: they are the window containing about 97% of systems, defined to organise watch duty. Storms outside the season are possible and have occurred in every month of the year.

The Atlantic peak sits around 10 September, when the water is warmest and wind shear is lowest. That is also when the highest category hurricanes form, growing out of tropical waves coming off Africa.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the Pacific season start earlier?
Eastern Pacific water reaches the required temperature a few weeks before the Atlantic does.
Is there a South Atlantic season?
Not officially. South Atlantic hurricanes are extremely rare; the best known case is Catarina, which struck southern Brazil in March 2004.
